SPANGLE

Unique ID: NMS-4BD7A3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete copper alloy object, possibly a spangle of Early Saxon date (c. AD 410 - 600). The object is sub-triangular with a rounded apex with a circular perforation 1.3mm in diameter. There is no decoration visible. All edges are heavily abraded.

Similar thin sheet-metal objects have been found in early Anglo-Saxon graves, with perforations and, generally, exhibiting stamped decoration (MacGregor and Bolick 1993, 244-6). They have been found attached to brooches, pins and buckets. Also compare NMS-2E02A2, WMID-337966, SF8703 and SF8704.
