MOUNT

Unique ID: SOM-3697FB

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Post Medieval cast copper alloy mount with two integral rivet spikes on the back. The mount is an fluer de lis in shape with a central lozenge shaped petal with narrow curved petals to each side, the ends of which curve around to meet the lower band leaving circular openings. The lower part is divided from the upper petals by a band defined by two horizontal incised lines. The lower part is broadly trapezoid with slightly projecting corners and a small projection in the centre of the lower edge. The back is flat with an unfinished surface. The attachment spikes are oval in section, they taper slightly from the base before breaking, one near the base and one after curving 90 degrees downwards, both old breaks. The are placed along a cnetral line, one near the top and one near the base. The mount is 20.8mm long by 18.4mm wide, 1.1mm thick excluding the rivets, 5.6mm including. It weighs 1.78 grams.

The shape is reminiscent of spur terminals and the general construction and form is similar to the very varied mounts with integral spiked rivets to go on leather broadly dating to the 17th century. For a similar mount see Read (2001, 37; no. 336), which he dates to the 17th century, and SOM-760266 on this database.
