Lead weight. Cast barrel-shaped line weight with a tightly butted seam showing it has been clenched tightly around a fishing line, and was probably deposited along with it still in place. The medial hole is now of diameter 2.5mm. Patinated, and flattened on one side. Weights made of rolled lead sheet, either clenched or rolled for attachment to the edge of a net, come from Middle Saxon contexts at Flixborough, while comparable sinkers were recovered from a late medieval boat near Blackfriars Bridge, London. The more solid form of this example relates it to the forms of later and recent fishing weights; it weighs about one averdepois ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800

Length: 22.1mm, Diameter: 15.7mm, Weight: 28.12gms

Class: Line
