A copper alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester type, dating from the 1st century AD. The bow is curved, and is oval in cross section. the inside of the bow is bevelled on either side. At the foot of the bow a small part of the catch plate remains, this is worn and broken, and projects from almost half way up the bow. At the head of the brooch the bow curves round at ninety degrees before projecting out either side for the wings, which are worn and broken. The spring would have originally sat underneath the wings. Above this is an attachment loop created by a thin piece of copper alloy which curves back to meet the bow. This would have held the spring in place. It is sub oval in cross section. The pin of the brooch is now missing.
The brooch has a red brown patina, and measures 69.8mm in length, 9.7mm in width, 3.7mm in thickness and weighs 7.88g.
The brooch is similar to Hattatt 2000, page 297, number 1455.
