A Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy hinged strip bow brooch, probably dating to AD 25-70. The brooch survives largely complete, with the head damaged and missing only its axis bar and pin.

The head of the brooch consists of a rectangular sheet of copper alloy with a central rectangular slot to accommodate a hinged pin, now lost. The rear of the head was rolled backwards to hold the axis bar, although it is now damaged and is truncated at the fold. Traces of iron corrosion would suggest that either the pin or axis bar were iron. The bow is undecorated, and tapers into a a pointed foot, from the reverse of which expands an integral, unperforated, sub-rectangular catchplate, with a right curving pin rest.

Dimensions: length 45.3mm; width 9.7mm; thickness 11.3mm; weight 5.35g.

Bayley & Butcher (2004: fig. 119) illustrate comparable examples, with further parallels excavated in Roman contexts at Dorchester are published by Woodward et al. (1993: fig. 61, nos. 32, 35-36).
