A worn and incomplete worn cast copper-alloy Romano-British Lock-pin.

Description: The object has a flattened globular head with single dividing the head and the pin. The pin is integral with a square cross-section shaft and projects from the base of the head. it is moderately worn with some corrosion product is present on the break at the end of the shank It is mottled dark to light green.

Measurements: 26.59mm high, 15.02mm thick (diameter of head) and 14.4g in weight.

Discussion: This example does not fit the usual Roman lock pins known although NMS-9B7F71 which is complete has a similar head. That being said this example's shank doesn't flatten out and is square in cross-section rather than flatten rectangular. There is also a number of roman objects known as 'bell-shaped' mounts. Sally Worrel, National Finds Advisor on Iron Age and Roman finds comments on similar mounts that 'copper-alloy mounts with an iron shank and a central projection are generally referred to as 'bell-shaped', although there is some variation in their shape. These, and similar mounts have a variety of possible uses including furniture knobs, decorative furniture mounts and door and box mounts (see Allason-Jones 1985).' The solid copper-alloy shank and incomplete nature of the object means an exact ID is not possible
