An opaque light blue globular glass bead of unknown date, Iron Age to Modern, 400 BC - AD 1900. The object is 9.2mm in diameter, has a length of 7.4mm and weighs 0.79g. The central perforation has a diameter of 3.3mm. The bead was formed from a spiral of molten glass, visible as a slight spiral ridge.
Glass beads are problematic to date. Whilst often considered to be Roman (see, for example, LON-00CE9C, and SWYOR-F91EF7) or Early Medieval, beads of this form have been in use from the Iron Age through to modern times, for example 'in spangles on lace making bobbins in the 19th century', (GLO-867B76). Consequently it is not possible, without additional contextual or diagnostic evidence, to date this bead with any accuracy.
