An incomplete, cast lead spindle whorl of probable Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 900 - 1200. It is 32.2mm in diameter and 8.6mm thick. It weighs 28.62g. The central hole is 10.61mm in diameter. The whorl is a pale brown in colour with an even patination and no surface decoration. It seems to have been worn down across its upper surface, or be miss-cast, or broken, resulting in a triangular, slightly dished, section. The thinner side is worn through almost to the central hole. On the lower surface is a circumferential trough running parallel with the central hole which may be a result of shrinkage after casting. Undecorated spindle whorls of this type are difficult to date with any certainty, this appears to be a Walton Rogers Form B and the large hole may suggest a Late Anglo-Saxon date onwards. Form B are thought to be Early Medieval to Medieval (Walton Rogers pp 24 - 25).
