STRAP FITTING

Object type certainty: Certain

A copper alloy openwork strap fitting dating from AD 1000 - 1100 and probably a "ball-ended" type strap fitting. The decorative content of this piece is probably derived from the Winchester style. It is a roughly heart shaped plate with, instead of a pointed apex, a bar consisting of three conjoined hemispherical lobes. The flat plate has an extra smaller lobe at the edge between the two main curves of the heart. There is a small circular sewing or rivet hole in each of the two main corners of the heart. The rest of the plate is filled with larger circular apertures; eleven in total, with two of them intersecting. The fitting is 23.9mm long, 26.8mm wide and 4.8mm thick. 6.7g. Compare NLM-457CA4, DENO-ED172D, NLM-A7C877, PUBLIC-B782C6, BH-587E21. Recently the type has been published by Rogerson and Ashley (2015).
