A Medieval copper alloy mount or stud dating from AD 1300 - 1500. It appears to be anthropomorphic. It is oval in plan and convex, with a hollow reverse and an integral circular sectioned rivet projecting from the back. The front face is decorated with cross-hatched lozenges incised on the upper half, and a moulded transvese line across the centre and a moulded raised longitudinal line across the lower half. This looks like the nose guard of a helmet. Faint mouldings in each lower quarter could represent eyes. There are traces of gilding on the front. The object is 18.1mm long, 13.8mm wide and 7.3mm thick. 2.6g.
The mount is similar to acorn strap mounts which have cross-hatching on the cup, but the "nose guard" suggests this mount has an anthropomorphic design of a helmeted figure. Other mounts of similar style are interpreted as zoomorphic, perhaps depicting a wolf. Compare IOW-5E8C89, SWYOR-0417C0 and HESH-127F03 for a range of designs.
