An incomplete copper-alloy bow and fantail brooch of Roman date, c.AD 50 - 150. Only the fantail now remains, the rest having been lost to worn breaks.
The fantail is triangular and a transverse collar is present at the narrower end, where it would have joined the upper bow. The front of the fantail is decorated with a central column of three vertically aligned conjoined lozenge shaped cells. These cells are flanked by smaller recessed triangular cells. No enamel is retained. The worn remains of a catchplate project from the reverse of the lower bow.
The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The brooch is 21 mm long, 11 mm wide, 5 mm thick and weighs 2.28 g.
Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.315, fig.174 and date from the mid-1st-2nd century AD.
