Copper alloy nutcrackers fragment. One complete arm and the top of its counterpart as far as the end of the jaws, from a pair of nut-crackers - though Dr Kevin Leahy advises that similar tools were used at table for cracking shellfish claws. The arm is of a bevelled biconvex section with a graceful curve towards the end of the handle. The thickness, at 10mm, might hint at design according to the metric system introduced to Europe under Napoleon c.1800, and latterly adopted by industry elsewhere.
