A complete cast copper-alloy annular brooch dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1400. The brooch is broadly oval in plan, a recessed constricted area on one side housing the wound pin (the latter slightly bent in old damage). On the upper edge of the frame is a projecting moulded stylised motif in the form of two hands clasped together in prayer, while on the lower edge is a single prominent collet inset with a white stone. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 32.21mm in length, 20.72mm wide across the axis of the pin, 2.6mm thick at the centre of the projecting clasped hands and 1.78mm thick at the midpoint of the frame. It weighs 2.87g.
A parallel for this brooch, a relatively common form clearly produced in high numbers, is published by Egan and Pritchard (1991, pp. 254-55; ref. 1335). Copper-alloy examples recorded on the PASdatabase include: HAMP-C9FBB1, SOMDOR-9FC312, SF-03DDC5, BH-7AE165, SUSS-7854B4 and SF-D1D6C0. This form of brooch is also encountered in gold (see SUR-A704D2).
