Treasure reference 2018 T1004: a post-medieval silver cufflink, 13mm in diameter, 2mm thick and weighing 1.64g.

The object is circular in form and sub rectangular in cross section, with a turned down and slightly flared edge. Its upper surface is decorated with a stamped from the reverse design, which consists of two raised hearts in a mottled field with a crown above (Lewis Form 1, Type A).The design is enclosed within a circumferential solid linear border. The reverse has a now broken circular shaped and cross sectioned loop, which has been soldered on.

The cuff link would have been used with a matching pair to attach two edges of the cuff of a sleeve to each other by slotting the discs through holes in the fabric and using an elongated silver link that would have connected the two attachment loops together.

Cufflinks and buttons like this are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, but continued to be used as a general symbol of love and marriage until the end of the century.
