A near complete cast copper-alloy Medieval single loop buckle with integral plate c.1250-1400.
Description: The frame is D-shaped with an integral plate, the plate has even narrowed sides with heavily worn upper surface. The frame has a wide collar prior to the buckle frame and second thin collar further down the integral plate. Two rivet holes go through the plate the rivet hole through the buckle end collar has a bent over rivet in place. The plate has a fleur de lis terminal. The plate is bent slightly along its length, common with many such spur buckle plates.The buckle has a dark grey patination with slight purple hue and some spare bright green corrosion
Measurements: 42.85mm long, 13.66mm wide, 5.32mm thick (inc rivet, 2.41mm thick without rivet) and 4g in weight.
Discussion: Whitehead (1996, 34 fig 196 and 198) illustrates two examples with similar features to this example and dates them to c. 1250-1400. These buckles are often suggested as being related to the attachment of spurs to boots/straps.
