BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD

Unique ID: IOW-E76144

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead (c. 2500 BC- c. 1500 BC).

This arrowhead has been made on a tertiary flake. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross-section. The arrowhead has been knapped using both direct and indirect percussion techniques. Both faces have received about the same amount of knapping. The tang has a square end and is a sub-square in plan, roughly pointed-oval in cross-section. Each barb now has a square end but they seem to have been truncated. The ends of the barbs are now flat and smooth.

The arrowhead has a dull white patina overall.

Length: 28.9mm; width: 19.8mm; thickness: 3.9mm. Weight: 1.69g.

Similar flint barb and tanged arrowheads are associated with the Beaker phase of the Late / final Neolithic and Early Bronze Age c. 2500 BC-1500 BC. The possible loss of the end of the barbs makes it difficult to securely assign the arrowhead to a formal type but it is probably a Green Low or Conygar Hill type. For related types of arrowheads cf. Butler 2005 (Butler 2005: 162-165, figs. 68-69; after Green 1980).
