A complete lead alloy weight, dating from an unknown period.
The weight is 'barrel-shaped', and has an uneven aperture throughout its interior. There is a brown-grey patina on the surface. It is possible that this weight is early medieval in date as a quantity of material dating to this period has been found in the vicinity. However, Watling (2009, 249) notes that similar weights, probably used to nets used for fishing and bird netting, have been found on sites ranging from the Iron Age to medieval periods. The examples illustrated by Watling (ibid) have been rolled to form a cylinder; however, the artefact under discussion here, similar to those of LANCUM-57A92D, has been cast.
