An incomplete copper-alloy Purse Bar of Medieval date (AD 1450-1550). Ward Perkins Type A1 or A2. The object is composed of a single arm which terminates in and old abraded break. The arm is circular in section. The central block is square and has a vertical hole to accommodate the shank of the now missing suspension loop. This hole would enable the suspension loop of the purse to rotate. The central box is decorated on each face with a nielloed pattern. One face has four double diagonal lines, the other has four double diagonal lines running in opposition to four more double lines. This forms a group of lozenge cells.

The metal has a greenish brown predominantly smooth patina.

Length: 42.71mm, Width: 14.8mm, Thickness: 2.22mm, Weight: 18.9g.

Class: Ward Perkins Type A1 or A2
