A cast lead or lead alloy fragment of a spindle whorl or weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably Roman (AD50-350). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and D shaped in cross section; it has been heavily eroded in the soil. The central hole is a an irregular oval shape and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 7.98mm x 7.14mm. Both faces are plain and undecorated; there is an indistinct wavy line around the bottom edge of the whorl - this maybe decoration. The spindle whorl has a cream - white coloured surface patina. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery).
The whorl measures 28.58mm in length and has a width of 12.8mm, is 8.68mm thick and weighs 31.30 grams.
