Roman Samian ware base sherd, 58mm long, 51mm wide and 24mm thick with a weight of 26.9g.
The object consists of an open circular base which has a bowl form which is slightly wider than its base and turns abruptly upwards and tapers slightly. The inside of the bowl has a partial makers stamp which reads [.]ARVSSA.
The form is DR 33.
Robert Hopkins has privided the following info.
'Stamped by Carussa i of Lezoux, who was working c. AD 160-200. The die is 3a (Hartley & Dickinson, Names on Terra Sigillata, Vol 2, p.260); the illustration for this die comes from an example excavated at Lezoux. On Hartley's original card index for this die, is the comment that the dot's found between the letters do not always register, as is the case here, there should be a dot between the A and R, and in the V. The nearest example of a Dr 33 with this die is from Wakerley, Northants, and a cup of unidentified form from the Piddington villa, Northants
