A decorated lead spindle whorl, probably of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1600. It is flattened bi-conical in form (biconvex), with a wide median band (Walton Rogers Form C2). Both faces have a cast design consisting of raised pellets and lines forming a four pointed star with one extra line running from the central hole to the edge. The central aperture is 9.6mm diameter. The whorl has a light grey patina. It is 33.6mm in diameter and 10.9mm thick. It weighs 36.7g. Walton Rogers (in the Flixborough volume and York Fasicules) suggests that biconical whorls date from AD 1100 onwards and cites Ivens et al (1995) that those with dots are Post Medieval.
