Unique ID: IOW-56591B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy single-loop buckle (c. 1270-c. 1350). Meols type 12.

The pin and roller are missing.

Prior to distortion the frame would have been oval in plan with an off-set narrowed bar. The outer edge is expanded and recessed to accommodate a copper-alloy sheet roller on which the pin-tip would have rested. The bar is irregular in cross-section.

The frame has a green patina where it is not corroded.

Length: 18.0mm; width: 21.5mm; thickness: 4.6mm. Weight: 2.90g.

A similar buckle has been published and dated c. 1270-c. 1350 (Egan & Pritchard 1991: 76, fig. 46, ref: 317).
