Object type certainty: Certain

A complete Medieval to post-Medieval lead alloy standing weight (c. 1200-c. 1600).

This weight is conical in form and the main body is circular in cross-section. It tapers from the base towards the suspension loop at the top. The base is flat and the top has oblique shoulders and a narrowed flat suspension loop. The piercing is a circular hole with a diameter of c. 2.5mm.

The weight is grey overall.

Height: 36.5mm; diameter at base: 19.3mm. Weight: 62.18g.

Lead weights were used throughout a large span of time and were generally easy to manufacture; therefore, they are difficult to date outside of secure archaeological contexts. This style of standing weight seems to have been used most frequently within the Medieval and post-Medieval periods. For a similar example, cf. Biggs and Withers 2000: 32, ref: 73.
