Small incomplete copper-alloy Polden Hill brooch of Transitional Type 2/3 CD PH 2.b2 of Roman date (c. 50--60 AD). The bow of the brooch is D-shaped in section and narrows as it curves in an S-shape down from the semi-cylindrical wings of the spring mechanism. The spring and the pin are both now missing. The semi-cylindrical wings are decorated by longitudinal ridges, spaced evenly. Further decoration is provided by a longitudinal ridge and small protrusion at the point where the bow curves away from the head of the brooch. A small angled section at the foot of the brooch on the back of the bow represents a catchplate. The object has a matt, green patina. It is 31.98mm in length, 20.64mm in width and 3.47mm in thickness. It weighs 3.65g.
A similar example is recorded in Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 3 CD PH 2.b2 Plate 45, no.1792. The homeland of 2.b may actually have been limited to Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
Hattatt, Ancient and Romano-British Brooches, p. 70, no. 26, which is noted as a rather late example, dating to c. 50 - 90 AD.
