An incomplete copper alloy medieval strap end, dating from c. AD 1300-1400. The strap end would have originally been formed of two plates, one of which is now missing. The plate is sub rectangular in shape, narrowing from the attachment edge to the terminal which is triangular with a central rounded point. The plate has been folded twice across itself, and is worn.

The plate is decorated with an incised zoomorphic design depicting an animal, possibly a mythical creature or a wyvern. The creature has it's head at the narrow end of the plate, which is turned and facing back. The head had a long snout with the mouth open and the tongue projecting out. The eye is an irregular oval shape with the triangular shaped ear behind. The body is to the left of the head, with a thin neck widening into the body before narrowing again. The body then widens again before extending into the attachment part of the strap end, it is unclear if this is the tail of the creature. Just after the neck is a leg extending down to the incised line border running around the edge of the plate. The body is decorated with small triangular impressions.

The attachment edge has two circular perforations where two rivets would have held the plates together, the rivets are now missing. One of the circular perforations is broken along one edge. The reverse of the plate is undecorated, and has creases in it.

The strap end has a dark green patina, and measures 25.8mm in length, 19.7mm in width, and weighs 3.60g.

A similar object can be seen in Margeson 1993, page 27, number 140. Similar strap ends and buckles on the database include SOM-8E48A6, SWYOR-25C335, IOW-4EE451 and HAMP-AFC375.
