A complete Medieval copper-alloy zoomorphic terminal collar from a right-angled drop handle (1270-1600).

This collar is fitted over the horizontal terminal end of a handle arm and is secured by burring. The collar, hollow and oval in cross-section, is flat at the inner end and is in the form of a beast's head, probably that of a dog or hound. The forward facing head has grooves delineating the nose and mouth. Grooves at both sides may represent hair.

The handle is circular in cross-section and has a maximum diameter of 5.6mm.

The collar and handle are green and the terminal have a green patina and the break at the right patches of a dark green patina. Both have patches of corrosion. The break at the right angle is old.

Overall length: 32.5mm; length of collar: 18.8mm; width: 14.4mm; thickness: 11.5mm. Weight: 20.50g.

A similar collar can be seen on an illustrated handle from London (Egan 1998: 175, ref: 487).
As cited by Egan (1998, 175), a similar handle survives from an original pair on a shallow sheet bowl from a hoard of 14th-16th century metalwork found in Wales. These types of handles may also have come from caskets or chests.

Compare with: IOW-3C28AD; IOW-632E9B and IOW-B14092. For a complete drop handle, see KENT-73C75C.
