Lead weight. Cast near-conical weight with a flat base bearing a small [diameter 2.7mm] centrally drilled hole; in profile the cone is slightly offset relative to its base. Slight shrinkage lines at the flat end may indicate the object was cast in an open mould. The metal retains a grey tint which may point to a relatively recent date, or to unusual circumstances of burial. Weights of pyramidal form are often ascribed to a broad medieval date, and some are reported from the London waterfront (Egan 1998, page 322; Biggs and Withers 2000, 30-33). The conical form superficially resembles these but is distinct. The mass does not suggest a whole unit though a round weight from late medieval London also approaches this value (Egan 1998, table 15, no. 1000), possibly of one and a half averdepois ounces. If so, this was perhaps one of a set of graduated weights. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800.
