A cast copper alloy winding key. It consists of a trefoil shaped bit which is hollow with a triangular aperture, and has a rectangular flange at the underside, a solid circular-section stem and a flat trifoliate bow with a central hole, countersunk from both sides.
The overall length is 40.8mm, the bit measures 13.8 by 12.6mm and the stem has a diameter of 6.7mm. The width at the bow is 39.6mm & the thickness is 4.7mm, and it weighs 25.7g.
Probably a winder for a clockwork mechanism, and dates from the 19th or early 20th century.
