An incomplete cast copper-alloy small long brooch of probable Anglo-Saxon attribution, dating c. 450-480 AD. The brooch is complete except for the iron pin, which is now only present in the form of concreted corrosion products on the reverse face of the object. It demonstrates a rectangular headplate with hemi-spherical notches (four in total) cut into its upper and lower edge. On the back of the headplate is a single perforated lug where the pin would have been attached, now largely obscured by the aforementioned corrosion resulting from the pin. The bow is 'D' shaped in section, with a large rectangular moulding at its junction with the headplate and two pairs of moulded double transverse grooves on the straightened lower bow, which themselves are followed by a relatively plain foot decorated with two closely spaced pairs of transverse raised mouldings. On the reverse face of the brooch the upper bow is somewhat dished, while projecting from the rear of the lower bow is an integrally cast catchplate with a rolled back edge. Preserved in good condition with an even greenish patina, it measures 48.9mm in total length, 25.01mm wide at the headplate, 8.75mm thick at the pin lug, 3.48mm thick at the midpoint of the upper bow and weighs 11.55g.
