A complete and worn post-Medieval Irish copper-alloy 'Gun Money' shilling of James II (1685-1691), probably struck at Limerick in 1690. Spink: 6582G.
Obverse: IACOBVS·II·DEI·GRATIA; Laureate bust facing left.
Reverse: 1690·MAG·BR·FRA·ET·HIB·REX; Crown over sceptres dividing JR, XII above, month of issue (June) below.
Diameter: 23.0mm. Weight: 3.79g. DA=12:12.
These coins were issued in Ireland during the Williamite war of 1689 -1691, and were made from recycled metals, including cannon and bells with the notion that they could be redeemed for face value after James had recovered the throne of England, which ultimately never occurred. The date 1690 suggests that this example was probably struck at Limerick.
