One disc of a post-medieval copper alloy cuff link dating from AD 1662 - 1700. It is flat and circular with the remains of an integral attachment loop on the reverse. The face is decorated with a pair of clasped hands above two hearts, surmounted by a crown, on a stippled field of tiny, raised dots, all within a raised border and flat outside edge. There is a stepped flange round the edge. It is 15.6mm in diameter and 1.9mm thick. It weighs 1.45g.
Cufflinks and buttons with this design are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza (AD 1662), but continued to be used as a general symbol of love and/or marriage and were fashionable in the second half of the 17th century (Lewis, M, Data Sheet 46, 'Crown and Heart' Buttons and Cufflinks', Finds Research Group AD 700-1700).
Other cufflinks of this type are recorded on the database: compare for example references NMS-4164E5 and WAW-9D77D1.
