PENDANT

Unique ID: LEIC-2A970B

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of a silver object, probably originally a disc-shaped pendant. The fragment comprises a piece of silver sheet with no intact edge, decorated with repousse ornament creating five radiating lines of dots which converge in the centre of the fragment.

The decoration upon this fragment, its form and its association with a grave assemblage suggests it could derive from a silver sheet disc-shaped or 'scutiform' pendant, similar to those illustrated in MacGregor and Bolick (1993) figs. 25.3-5, p. 162. Scutiform pendants are usually found in grave contexts, and several are now recorded on the PAS database e.g. BUC-330014, KENT-5A33F2 and HAMP3426.

Notes:

Some fragments of brooch (shown in image a) were recovered prior to this material and have been recorded as LEIC-B64405.

The fragment was found in association with 45 worn fragments of gilded copper alloy (some joining), which seem to form at least two, possibly three brooches (there is a very unusual gilded boss which may also form part of a brooch or be part of a mount or similar). Four fragments of at least two annular brooches were also recovered, and along with these a series of 13 beads, including two of amber and three decorated, suggesting an inhumation burial which has been severely disturbed by ploughing.
