An incomplete copper-alloy medieval forked spacer for a composite strap-end (AD c.1270-c.1450), missing the tip of one of its forks. It has a plain acorn knop terminal with a collar dividing the acorn element from the two prongs. The prongs are flat and rectangular in cross-section and unequal in length: measuring from the centre of the collar the longer prong is 19.4 mm long and the shorter one is 18.0mm long.The object is fairly corroded and has a green patina. Overall the object measures 30.11 mm long, 21.3mm wide and 4.3mm thick at the terminal. It weighs 2.46 grams.
Examples of forked spacers similar to this can be found in Egan, G. and Pritchard, F. (1991) Dress Accessories: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London. Pg. 144, fig. 94, no. 680-681, though unlike no. 680 the object has a plain acorn knop terminal and it is shorter and wider than no. 681. This object is also similar to records IOW-AC9ED8, IOW-455D71, IOW-2108B7 and IOW-1931F6 on the database, all recorded and identified by Mr Frank Basford from the Isle of Wight and PUBLIC-6F56E6.
