COSMETIC MORTAR

Unique ID: NMS-C48D0E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of a cast copper-alloy cosmetic mortar of late Iron Age to Roman date. Only part of the bow and terminal loop survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The bow is of uncertain form, with the broken end U-shaped in cross-section. Underneath the surviving end of the bow is an integrally cast but broken circular loop with central circular aperture. The entire object has a green patina with corrosion pitting in many of the surfaces. See SF-699DD2 for a very similar fragment. Extant length is 24mm, 6mm in width, 11.1mm at terminal end, and weighs 2.5g.

Cosmetic mortars such as this would have formed part of a cosmetic set, the now missing corresponding pestle allowing for the grinding of small amounts of cosmetic powders. These objects are unique to Britain and Gaul and often have fertility associations. They probably find their origins in the late Iron Age and date to between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
