BUCKLE

Unique ID: LEIC-45954C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval copper alloy buckle and intergal plate, c. 35mm long and 12mm wide, with a weight of 3.3g.

The object is sub rectangular in form and rectangular in cross section. It consists of a rectangular shaped single loop buckle frame, with a slightly off set short end, which is attached to a probably semi-circular cross sectioned shaft with worn edges suggesting it is incomplete. Where the two join there is a swelling to accomodate a circular hole which would have held the pin and below this (as shown) is a hole which is filled with a circular cross sectioned rivet.

These are often referred to a spur buckles, but they may have been used for many purposes and the long shaft on this one would suggest it is not suitable for a spur. Recently recorded similar examples include KENT-CC890C, GLO-73E387 and KENT-427CCB.
