A copper alloy finger ring, probably Roman in date, consisting of a flat strip of metal bent into a penannular ring with both terminals narrowing to a point and overlapping slightly. The pointed ends suggest this could have been used as an earring, but they may also simply be narrowed to fit together when worn on the finger and penannular to allow for expansion. The ring may also been made from a broken fragment of a bracelet which are often penannular in the Roman period. The outer face of the hoop is decorated with three horizontal concentric grooves which converge towards the ends of the terminals. The database has several similar examples such as NMS-6BB780 and NMS-148017 which are attributed to the Roman period.
Crummy (1993) illustrates a penannular bracelet and penannular finger rings with similar incised decoration from Roman Colchester on pages 42 & 48, figs.44 & 50, nos.1679, 1766 & 1774, which are dated from the 2nd to the 4th century AD.
