An incomplete late Iron age to Early-Roman Langton Down bow type brooch , c.AD 25-60.
Description: In plan, the brooch is almost T-shaped with a bow that is a flat rectangular in cross section and widens slightly towards the foot. It has a cylindrical-section head, formed by wide encompassing wing within in which the copper-alloy spring mechanism would have fitted, although it has come away it has been recovered by the finder. The bow has an incised line from top to bottom and is quite thin for the type. The catchplate is incomplete but includes the rest for the pin, with a slight break between the upper catchplate. The brooch is a light green colour with some white chalk staining.
Measurements: 44.95mm long, 13.91mm wide, 10.14mm thick and 3.8g in weight.
Discussion: This brooch fits a group of transitional Late Iron Age to Romano-British bow brooches, see Hattatt (2000) fig 165 n.39 for similar construction. A number have also been reported to the PAS, such as KENT-B7C38B, SOM-C37EDA and SF-AB34EE, to name but a few.
