Unique ID: SF-1CB91C

Object type certainty: Certain

A complete but bent and distorted cast copper-alloy pin dating to the Roman period, c. 43-300 AD. This example is of Cool's (1990) group 5, 'pins with simple grooved heads'. The pin itself is circular-sectioned, tapering to a sharp point, Its head is plain but topped with a pointed element created by the incising of a deep transverse groove, aside from this feature the pin itself is plain and undecorated. Preserved in fair condition with an uneven brownish patina, it measures c. 101mm in length (when the bends are accounted for), 2.06mm thick at the head and 1.65mm thick at the midpoint of the shank. It weighs 1.92g.

Similar pins are illustrated by Cool (1990), see fig. 4, especially nos. 10-11. This example is very plain by comparison. In her study, she suggests a floruit of the 2nd century AD, though the type was in use up till the 4th century AD.
