Lead seal matrix. Cast pointed-oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix with a moulded fleur de lis on the reverse, expanded at one end to form a suspension lug. The matrix bears an oval frame with a cross pattée. In the centre of the seal is an incised pointed oval which does not appear to contain a motif; it appears blank. Surrounding the pointed-oval is an inscription which reads + S' hVG FIL' IOhS' (Seal of Hugh son of John). The legend takes up only just over half of the space available, and so is possibly incomplete or unfinished. Medieval, 1200-1300.
