Fragment from a copper-alloy single-loop rectangular buckle of medieval date (c. 1350 - 1400 AD). The fragment is the expanded outer edge of the buckle frame. It is sub-triangular in section, with four parallel transverse grooves on one side and a cross-shaped pin notch on the other. Two spurs are all that remain of the rest of the frame, terminating in worn, broken edges. The fragment is dark-brown in colour with some mottled green surface corrosion. It is 21.68mm in length, 12.50mm in width and 4.78mm in thickness. It weighs 3.36g.

More complete examples of this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead (2003) Buckles, p. 27, nos. 135 - 139. These have provided the date range suggested for the example under discussion.
