A complete silver sewing thimble of 18th or early 19th century date. The thimble is domed shaped and divided into two decorative panels. The upper section of the thimble has multiple small, machine-made pits arranged in circumferential lines to the dome. The peak of the thimble is worn and the decoration unclear, but there appears to be fainter (shallower) pits aranged around the centre in a swirl. The lower half of the thimble has two abstract floral sections between a lozenge surrounded by rocker-arm decoration, with opposite is a sub-rectangular panel with convex sides and concaved lines top and bottom again of rocker-arm pattern. The centre of this panel appears undecorated although there are scratches which, with the eye of faith, may be 'read' as R G. However this is far from certain. There are no maker's marks. The decoration suggests an 18th century / Georgian date (c. AD 1700-1820). Some thimbles with floral designs and of a similar date can be seen on page 29 and 33 of The Collector's Guide to Thimbles by Bridget McConnel (1995). An almost exact parallel is SWYOR-C63B61 on this database. Compare also HAMP-92D4F7, SWYOR-405340, IOW-B7992B and PUBLIC-994532.

Notes:

This object is less than 300 years old (see note on SWYOR-C63B61 which confirms that that example is under 300 years old), and therefore does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the 1996 Treasure Act.
