That being said Iron Age coin finds from sites in Kent are not uncommon (though potins dominate the recorded site assemblages and gold coins are rare), and such a spread across such a wide chronological span would not be unusual. The site is within close geographical distance to a supposed Roman votive site, Anglo-Saxon cemetery (Kent HER TR 25 SW 56) and substantial Bronze Age (TR 25 SW 60) and Early-Medieval Barrow cemetery (TR 25 SW 1).
The first coin, no. 1 was found as an isolated find and as such cannot retrospectively be considered to be Treasure under the Treasure Act. However, this coin was found c. 85m away from the group of silver and copper alloy coins no. 3 to 8 and these were found c. 130m away from the second gold coin no. 2. From their date, coins 3 to 8 would seem to form a discrete group that are likely relate to the same depositional event. The eight coins come from the same area of a large field that was previously two separate fields and no other coins or artefacts have been reported from the surrounding fields. There are precedents for coin hoards being dispersed some distance by the plough but equally, sequential deposition over a period of time in a more dispersed area is a characteristic of ritualised deposition at Iron Age and early Roman sites.
Conclusion: Given that the coins were found in reasonably close proximity to each other suggests that they might represent two separate episodes of deposition at the same site, perhaps with a religious or ritual purpose (continued activity of this sort being commonly seen on Iron Age and early Roman sites). In this scenario, the coins 2 to 8 would qualify as Treasure, being two precious metal coins of the same find (and associated base metal coins). In addition, there is no evidence to suggest that the practice of cutting coins to create sub-divisions of denominations occurred in the Iron Age and it is likely that the cut silver coin (no. 3) was deliberately modified prior to deposition, making it potential Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.
",
