An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a brooch of probable Colchester Derivative type, dating c. AD 43-100. Only the lower bow, foot and catchplate survive, the rest of the brooch missing in an old break. The bow is 'D' shaped in section with a prominent longitudinal moulded ridge, the foot plain and the catchplate triangular with a rolled back edge that originally would have accomodated the pin. At the centre of the catchplate is a small oval cut-out section. Preserved in fair condition with an even greenish patina, it survives to a length of 22.65mm, 2.79mm thick at the truncated end of the upper bow, and weighs 2.45g.
As the head is missing, this brooch cannot be exactly typed. However, most of those with cutouts in their catchplates broadly belong to the Colchester Derivative forms. Compare Mackreth (2011) vol. II, pl. 31-35.
