A silver-gilt Post Medieval hooked tag, dating from the 16th century, AD 1500 - 1600. The back plate is trefoil with a pinked or engrailed edge. There is a hollow domed boss soldered to the front of each lobe. These are decorated with three filigree circles on each, with a pellet in the centre of each circle, also surrounded by a band of filigree. There are similar pellets and filigree borders at the apex of each dome, in the space between the three circles, and in the spandrels between the circles. Some of the decoration is missing. In the centre of the plate is circular hole occupied by a split pin in two pieces, each piece bending to the side on the back to secure it. Comparison with more complete examples suggests that this rivet once held in place a sheet flower.
On the reverse of the upper two lobes are scars from a rectangular attachment loop, which would have been soldered on but is now missing. On the reverse and soldered centrally to the lower lobe is a separate hook, flattened at point of solder and and broken before the hook.
The dress hook is 23.6mm long, 18.8mm wide and 8.4mm thick. 3.7g.
Read classifies this as Early Post Medieval Class D, type 6 (Read 2008, p.75-81). Similar example scan be found on the PAS database: SWYOR-AEEA51 ( 2013 T177), SF5706, SUR-B5E091 (2012 T818) and BERK-FB37C4 (2004 T283).
Notes:
As the object is more than 10% silver and more than 300 years old, it appears to meet the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act.
