A gilded silver Post Medieval cap-hook or hat-hook, with a circular plate of 12.5mm diameter with a raised frame of 2.2mm high, which is engrailed with closely spaced incised lines. The central portion of this plate is empty and likely once held a decorative piece of glass or stone. A gilded silver S-shaped fixing hook is soldered to the rear of the plate. This form of hook is particularly characteristic of Tudor hat decorations, which suggests a 16th century date for this object.
Diameter (of plate): 12.5mm, Length (including pin): 17.2mm, Height: 12mm, Weight: 2.16g.
Notes:
These types of hook are a characteristic category of Tudor dress accessory used to embellish the hats of high status individuals and are discussed by Gaimster et al (2002: 169-173). Objects of comparable date and function reported under the Treasure Act and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme include YORYM-589235 (2004 T191), SWYOR-C08232 (2013T245) and SF-2B7792 (2007T280).
Conclusion: The item comprises more than 10% precious metal and is dated at over 300 years old at the time of finding. As such it qualifies as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
