BUCKLE

Unique ID: HESH-29C9D4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of post-medieval date (c. 17th century), having lost one of its loops. The remaining frame is sub-rectangular in both plan cross section. Fixed to the strap bar is a cast and folded sub rectangular pin.

On its outer edge the frame is decorated by a series of rounded cast projections at each corner and another forming the pin rest which is more trapezoidal. Both the pin rest and pin have indications of wear from use; this has created a depression on both the pin and the rest. The buckle is of a mid - dark green colour with an even polished patina that covers all surfaces. Some of this patina has been chipped away in the plough soil and the whole buckle is slightly asymmetrical due to abrasion. The pin is made of a different copper alloy to the frame and is a lighter green brown colour with a similar worn patina.

The frame measures 19.4mm length, 27.8mm width and is 2.1mm thick. The buckle weighs 3.16 g

The design shares similarities with PAS database entries IOW-800F74 and DENO-D3A931. Similar buckles have been published and dated c. 1620-c. 1680 (Whitehead 1996, 84, nos 523 and 524).
