A square, pyramidal copper-alloy mount or stud probably dating from the latter half of the Medieval period The mount has a single, separate rivet, and remains of gilding. The pyramid has four sides and runs down to the rounded edge with no rim. The central rivet has broken unevenly at the point where it starts to spread into a rove / foot. The outside of the pyramid has a mid-green patina where not gilded, while the underside is brown.
Dimensions: 12.5mm square, 9.0mm from the apex of the pyramid to the end of the rivet, c4.5mm from the apex of the pyramid to its base.
Egan and Prichard (1991: 162) state that such mounts first appear in the early 13th century and proliferate in the 14th and early 15th century, giving examples of similar mounts (though more decorated) (ibid: 198-99, nos.1066, 1068 & 1076). However, the simplicity of the form and lack of decoration suggests that dates beyond this range should not be discounted, thus 1200-1500 is proposed.
