SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: LVPL-851B74

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A lead spindle whorl of biconical shape, cast with a hole of approximately 8.5mm diameter at the centre. One side features the recognisable spindle whorl patternation of raised pellets situated within negative spaces delineated by raised radial ridges. The opposite side is partly degraded but resembles the first.

There is a nick in the side of the body, possibly caused by plough action.

As the whorl is made of lead, this indicates a roughly medieval to post-medieval date. It is very difficult to apply a more exact date though due to a lack of a more complete diagnostic.
