A fragment probably from a medieval buckle plate consisting of a sheet of copper alloy. The fragment is irregular in shape due to irregular breaks. It was probably originally D-shaped, with a surviving straight edge where it was bent over the buckle frame and has broken on the bend and a curved bottom edge forming hald of the original D-shape. The straight edge bent over the frame has a cut out corner for the frame at the base and a cut out rectangular slot for the pin before the break. On the bottom of the sheet, where the curve meets the straight edge, is an attachment hole for a now missing rivet. The plate is decorated on the front with a double running row of broadly triangular indents along both complerte edges . Traces of a white metal coating survive on the surface. The reverse is plain.
The plate measures 29.9 mm in length, 26.9 mm in width, 0.5 mm in thickness and weighs 1.55 g.
Due to the simplicity of the design it is hard to be precise about the date but such large D-shaped plates with white metal coating and indented designs were in use with large buckles from the 12th century to the 15th.
