A ceramic, body sherd of a coarse ware bung hole pitcher, jug or cistern of Medieval date (c. 1250-1500 AD).
Description: The sherd is broadly circular in plan, with seven sides which each represent an abraded break. The bung hole is 9.5mm diameter and is surrounded by a flattened rim of approximate 36.69mm diameter at the top of a 17.6mm high neck. The fabric is hard and gritty with fine inclusions, black or dark grey coloured externally and with some sandy brown areas on the inside.
Measurements: The sherd is 74.2mm diameter, 31.16mm tall and 6.56mm in thickness. It weighs 68g.
Discussion: The vessel is probably a cistern, a handled jug-like container with a sump or bung hole at its base for storage of water or other liquid. These became popular in the 15th Century, possibly due to the increased popularity of beer, or home brew. (Laing, 2003, page. 86).
